First-year students of Social Work at the Faculty of Philosophy of Novi Sad University did their internship in the Organization for supporting women with disabilities IZ KRUGA VOJVODINA from April 28th to May 31st, 2022.
During the internship students got to know the work of the Organization IZ KRUGA VOJVODINA, the services it provides and the activities it realizes to improve the position of women with disabilities. We talked to students about disability terminology, types of disabilities, models of disability, the term accessibility (architectural, communicational and informational), stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and specifics of violence against women with disabilities, principles in working with women survivors of violence, guidelines for dealing with women with disabilities (physical, sensory and intellectual), the conduct of the competent institutions in the system of protection against domestic violence, obstacles women with disabilities face when reporting violence and applied procedures when working with women exposed to violence (risk assessment, making a safety plan).
During the internship in the Organization, students showed a high level of interest in the domain of violence against women with disabilities and motivation for further learning and volunteering in the Organization IZ KRUGA VOJVODINA. They concluded that it is consequential to work on raising awareness of young people about gender-based violence and informing them about available support services.
